Ask what Iranian identity means to this person
Ask three Iranians what “being Iranian” means and you may get three different answers: speaking Persian at home, never missing Nowruz with family, a particular faith, the food, the music, or simply a set of childhood memories. Someone raised in Iran, someone born abroad and someone who left last year may recognise the same tradition and feel differently about it.
Curiosity works better than an authenticity test. Ask which traditions are part of their everyday life, which ones they have left behind and what they would like future children to know. You are trying to picture a shared home, not grade somebody's Iranian identity.
Make family expectations explicit
“My family is important to me” can describe many arrangements. It might mean a weekly video call, Sunday lunch, helping parents financially or involving them before a relationship becomes official. Ask when families usually meet, how much weight their advice carries and what stays private between partners.
- Which language would you speak with parents and future children?
- What does religious practice look like on an ordinary week?
- How would holidays and visits be divided?
Do not let immigration status become the relationship
When two countries are involved, visas and relocation will eventually enter the conversation. They are legitimate topics. They should not, however, turn a new relationship into an emergency with a deadline and a request for money. Check the legal process yourself instead of relying on the person who benefits from your decision.
A workable plan makes room for both careers, both support networks and the possibility that immigration takes longer than hoped. Keep control of your documents and never misrepresent a relationship to authorities. Most importantly, ask yourself whether the relationship would still make sense if moving became slow, expensive or temporarily impossible.
