Making a long-distance relationship more real

Distance can support a real relationship, but only when both people replace assumptions with clear routines and practical plans.

Choose consistency instead of constant contact

Being on video all day can feel close for a week and exhausting by the next one. Talk about what is realistic: a short message during work, two proper calls a week, or a longer Sunday conversation when Tehran and Toronto are both awake. The exact routine matters less than whether both people can keep it without resentment.

Let ordinary life into the relationship too. Cook the same recipe, watch an episode together or stay on the phone while each of you walks home. You learn a surprising amount from these quiet repetitions—often more than from another intense conversation at two in the morning.

Confirm the person, without demanding surveillance

A few video calls at different times and a daily life that makes sense are reasonable ways to build confidence. Demanding passwords, permanent live location or access to somebody's phone is not verification. If trust only exists while one person is being watched, the problem has not been solved.

  • Do not send money for travel, emergencies or visa costs.
  • Book travel and accommodation yourself, through providers you control.
  • Keep copies of the booking and cancellation terms.
  • Tell someone you trust before an international meeting.
  • Have your own place to stay and enough money to return.
3

Put an actual meeting on the horizon

Talk about a real window for meeting: which season, which city, who can travel and what the likely cost is. Plans change; that is normal. A year of new excuses, no documents and no alternative plan is different.

4

Slow down before a life-changing decision

Spend meaningful time together in person before deciding on marriage or migration. Talk through the unromantic parts: work rights, money, family expectations, housing and what happens if a visa is delayed. Love may be the reason to consider a move, but legal and financial advice should come from an independent professional.
